The funny thing about celebrities and fragrances is that they’re probably the last people to actually wear the mainstream scents you see them promoting. I mean, I know they say they do… but this website indicates otherwise.

Confession: I’ve been known to spend hours there, browsing through the long list of celebrity-favourite scents, and let’s just say there are a ton of niche ones. (I’ve actually purchased perfumes based on that alone—like Apothia IF—figuring if they are good enough for celebs, they’re good enough for me!)

One indie brand you’ll see mentioned, and my latest fragrance trial, is By Rosie Jane. Founded by celebrity makeup artist Rosie Johnston, the line was born out of a scent she created for her own personal use, when it was so good that her clients and friends begged her to make it for them, too.

It was christened Leila Lou (after her daughter), and was followed a few years later by a second scent, Tilly (named for daughter number two). Both are made from essential oils in small batches, and hand-filled in Johnston’s California studio; they’re also paraben-, sulfate-, phthalate- and phosphate-free.

I’m loving their simple recycled brown paper packaging:

And here are the sweet words on the inside:

The two scents come in larger eau de parfum formats, but my preference is for these longer-lasting (and less expensive) rollerball oils. Very handy for the purse!

Now, let’s talk about each scent, because they are SO gorge if you’re a white flower person like I am:

Leila Lou has notes of pear, jasmine and fresh-cut grass. Thanks to the latter, it’s definitely the fresher/greener of the two. There’s a long list of celeb fans: Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Ashley Greene, Rachel Bilson, Sienna Miller, Kate Bosworth, Poppy Montgomery, Jennifer Garner, Emily VanCamp, Minka Kelly and Liv Tyler. (Wow!)

Tilly has notes of grapefruit, pineapple and gardenia. It’s a little more sensual (although both are pretty summery and “beachy”). Celeb fans of Tilly include Miley Cyrus, Rachel Zoe and Cameron Diaz.

Not bad company to be in, right? Neither one is at all chemical-smelling, and I’ve found the wearing time of the oil quite long (although it’s super-easy to re-apply due to the portable size).

As a longtime white-flower fragrance obsessive, I actually love both of these scents, so it’s next to impossible to pick a favourite—but if I had to, I’d probably go with Leila Lou, the original. I would say both are along the same lines as Monyette Paris and Kai, two other faves in my white-flower collection.

The bottom line: if you love something a little more unique, a little more natural than is the norm, and gorgeously beachy and delicate… then you should def check these out!
