Exclusive photos and interview! Supermodel Laetitia Casta on her latest campaign… and how she defines beauty

The first time I interviewed French supermodel and actress Laetitia Casta was a few years back, when I was on staff at ELLE Canada—and to this day she remains possibly the best-looking person I’ve ever met in real life. I mean, she’s not like regular models, who tend to be scarily tall, skinny and un-sexy when you meet them in person. Laetitia is womanly.

Which is why it makes total sense that Dolce & Gabbana chose her to rep their new fragrance, Pour Femme (a re-launch of the original 1992 version). I can tell you about the notes—neroli, raspberry, tangerine, jasmine, orange blossom, marshmallow, vanilla, sandalwood and heliotrope—but to get a REAL feel for the sexy scent, you need to check out the behind-the-scenes video shot by Mario Testino with Laetitia and male model Noah Mills in Sicily. Sicily! I want to go to there. It is sensual to the extreme.

As part of the launch campaign this month, BEAUTY EDITOR scored an exclusive chat with Laetitia (sadly, not in person this time!) as well as these images. Read on for Laetitia’s take on the shoot, the scent, her beauty and fashion choices… and why she says beauty is only skin deep.

BEAUTY EDITOR: You’ve worked with Mario Testino before—how was it working with him again on this campaign?

Laetitia: I adore working with Mario. He is a genius; a true artist with such incredible vision. He knows exactly how he wants a shot to look, and how to capture the essence and spirit of the moment so beautifully. This campaign is all about passion; both the raw, intimate passion but also the romantic and tender side. It was great working with Noah and Mario so collaboratively to bring that to life.

BEAUTY EDITOR: How does this fragrance stand out?

Laetitia: I think this fragrance stands out because it’s the perfect balance between being fresh and feminine, but also sweet and enticing. The ingredients complement each other beautifully to create a completely wearable and distinctive scent. To me, the combination of raspberry and vanilla creates an almost edible effect, making this fragrance completely addictive. I think this is [the] key to making Pour Femme stand out.

BEAUTY EDITOR: What’s your beauty regimen?

Laetita: My beauty regimem is reasonably low maintenance. When I’m not working I like to wear only a little bit of makeup, and keep my hair natural. As I am often shooting, where the makeup is a lot more intense than I would normally wear, it’s nice to have a break in my free time. Fragrance plays a large part in my beauty regimen. I love hair products and face creams that smell beautiful and I also enjoy using scented bath oils and burning scented candles. I think fragrances and scents can be incredibly powerful—they can completely alter your mood and make you feel a certain way. The finishing touch to my beauty regimen is using Pour Femme; it really sets me up for the day.

BEAUTY EDITOR: Are you interested in fashion? What do you love wearing for red carpet events?

Laetitia: Yes, I am very interested in fashion—I think being a model has made me really appreciate how hard designers work and how much passion goes into creating their collections. I have been honoured to wear and model clothes created by some of the top designers in the world, and it is still really exciting to me even now when I put on a gorgeous gown for an event. For me, it is really important to feel comfortable in an outfit on the red carpet, especially when all eyes are on you. I like to wear long gowns for the red carpet because I always feel more confident and sexy, but I like to dress in accordance with the event I am attending. I don’t tend to wear bright shades; I am guilty of enjoying a black dress, especially for the evening. I very much enjoy the theatre of the red carpet; it is an experience unlike any other.

BEAUTY EDITOR: Do you like to cook when you’re not working? What is your signature dish?

Laetitia: Cooking is a passion. It prevents me from being depressed when I feel blue. I even fall asleep with cooking books in bed when I plan to experiment [with] new dishes!

BEAUTY EDITOR: What is your definition of beauty?

Laetitia: My definition of beauty is someone who is comfortable in their own skin and shows their confidence inside and out. I don’t think beauty has to be judged on a physical aesthetic; often personality, someone’s character and their sense of humour are the parts that we find most attractive. To me, beauty is skin deep. I think as women we want to look our best, especially today when there is an increasing pressure to look a certain way. For me anyway, beauty goes far deeper than that.
